his is my Term 3 post, in response to rassilon12’s post. Here’s my review. BZRK certainly has an interesting concept – nanotechnology, specifically warfare with it. Two ways of using nanotech have been developed: nanobots, where the user puts on some sort of modified Oculus Rift and a pair of motion-control gloves to move a swarm of miniscule robots around, and the less plausible biots – where the user’s genes are spliced with those of a thousand other things to create “biots”, which are then (telepathically?) linked with the owner’s minds. Both of them are equipped to link up area’s of a person’s brain, essentially allowing for emotion control, if not mind control. Two factions, the Armstrong Fancy Gifts corporation and the titular BZRK, primarily use nanobots and biots respectively, and they’re essentially at war – the AFG want to wire all of humanity together to form the “Nexus Humanus”, BZRK want to stop them. While the former are set up as the villians and the latter as the heroes, it’s a very grey area – one of the first things that a BZRK leader does in the book is kill an innocent civilian, albeit with feelings of guilt. BZRK is written, in a way, to shock. Every sentence either jumps out at you, punching for the gut, builds the world and story up, or makes you feel slightly depressed. The only book I’ve read that’s more draining (in a good way!) to read is 1984, and that’s pretty draining. In a way, that fits: near the beginning of the actual story, the two protagonists, Sadie and Noah, are told by a recruiter for BZRK:

English

“From now on, there are only two outcomes for both of you. Madness, or death.”

Only once the recruiter is gone does his assistant hope for victory.

The insanity theme fits the whole way through, as no-one on either side is totally healthy, mentally. While the storytelling of BZRK is very well done, the actual story is a little shaky. The character whose backstory and motivations are the least cliqued is one of the antagonists, Bug Man. It makes a totally unmoral character almost win sympathy. The “heroes” are recognizable in motivations and personalities. The science is also a little shaky, what with the somehow-existing biots. Overall?

+ Fantastic, terrifying storytelling from a great author

+ A good concept, well explored

+ Grey-area heroes, yippee!
